Our patients have told us…

  • I have never been bothered by anything, how it is possible to have a varicocele
  • I thought the testicles were growing
  • only with exercise I felt weight
  • I have to have surgery right away
  • leave it for when I want to have children
  • surgery is dangerous
  • after the surgery I will suffer
  • only one surgical technique is able to solve my problem
  • the operation may not succeed

Are such statements valid?

  • in most cases, varicocele does not give symptoms
  • indeed the veins grow and give the image of an increase in the overall size of the testicle
  • in any movement that increases the contraction of the abdominal muscles (laughing, lifting weights, exercise) the blood reflux to the testicles and the veins dilate
  • the surgery is not urgent. The spermogram will determine the need for surgical intervention.
  • it may be too late to wait for the time of procreation. Semen burden is related to the duration of the problem in several cases.
  • the surgery, like any surgery has complications, but they are rare
  • recovery after surgery takes a few days.
  • microsurgery is the indicated technique
  • if the testicles are permanently damaged, surgery will stop the destructive effect of the varicocele, but will not restore the lost testicular tissue.

Are there any secrets?

  • The “surgeon’s experience” factor in dealing with the condition is the most important in diagnosis, choosing the time of operation and surgical recovery
  • The correct and detailed history and the correct spermograms and other special tests (which are only done in specialized andrological laboratories) guide to the correct diagnosis and treatment strategy.
  • Diagnostic tests (ultrasound and triplex of testicular vessels) in order to be reliable require knowledge of pathophysiology and clinical experience.
  • Misdiagnosis is easy to make, since diagnostic tests are dynamic tests (the result is determined by the experience of the doctor and the capabilities of the sonographic machine).
  • A strategy that solves one person’s problem may be completely ineffective for another.
  • It is not enough to just repair the varicocele, but continuous postoperative monitoring until conception is necessary.

Where should I read to learn about the condition?

The internet, as for any subject, offers infinite sources of information. But the validity is limited. International scientific societies have published guidelines and are the most authoritative. But they concern the condition and not the specific patient.

That is why our principle is not to present on our pages detailed information about diseases, but to offer detailed information to each man after taking a history and specialized diagnostic tests at the doctor’s office. The patient is the deepest knower of the symptoms of his illness, but he will never be able – and it does not help – to become the deepest knower of the illness.
